A practical guide to FXMacroData's 6 New Taiwan dollar series: who publishes them, when they are released in Taipei time and UTC, a real August 2026 unemployment example from the API, and how USD/TWD traders use the data.

This guide covers the New Taiwan dollar series in the FXMacroData production catalogue: six series spanning Taiwan's monthly labour-force survey, official foreign exchange reserves, the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan) discount rate and the TWD trade-weighted index. It explains who publishes each, when releases land in Taipei time and UTC, and how USD/TWD traders use them.

**Quick answer**

**What is covered**

6 TWD series: the unemployment rate, employment and labour-force participation (monthly), foreign exchange reserves (monthly), the CBC discount rate (recorded at each change) and the TWD nominal effective exchange rate (monthly).

**Who publishes it**

The Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS) for the labour and reserves series, the Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan), CBC, for the discount rate, and the BIS for the trade-weighted index.

**Why it matters**

TWD is a tightly managed, export-driven currency. Reserves and the CBC's policy stance say more about USD/TWD than most activity data, and life-insurer hedging and equity flows add a structural layer on top.

**Takeaway:**For TWD, the reserves series is the clearest official window into how actively the central bank is managing the exchange rate.

## Who Publishes Taiwanese Data

The**Central Bank of the Republic of China (Taiwan)**, usually called the CBC, sets policy rates at quarterly board meetings, held in March, June, September and December. Its headline rate is the discount rate. The CBC also manages the exchange rate under what it describes as a managed float: it does not target a level, but it intervenes to smooth what it considers excessive volatility, and it holds one of the largest stocks of foreign exchange reserves in the world.

The**Directorate-General of Budget, Accounting and Statistics (DGBAS)**is Taiwan's national statistics agency. It publishes the monthly Manpower Survey (unemployment, employment and participation) and carries the official foreign exchange reserves series in its statistical database, which is where FXMacroData takes it from. The TWD trade-weighted index is the BIS broad nominal effective exchange rate.

FXMacroData stores each value with its reference period (`date`) and the moment it was published (`announcement_datetime`). For TWD monthly series,`date`is the first day of the reference month, so`2026-08-01`refers to August 2026. Releases are typically available within seconds of official publication ([release speed](/release-speed) ).

## TWD Indicators Covered

### Policy rate

- [CBC discount rate](/taiwan/risk-free-rate) : the CBC's headline policy rate, recorded each time it changes. Because the CBC moves rarely and in small steps, usually 12.5 basis points, the series has long flat stretches. The latest change in the series took the rate to 2.000 per cent on 22 March 2024, after a run of increases from 1.375 per cent in March 2022. Check the latest row before using it in a carry calculation, since the series only updates on a change.

### Labour market

- [Unemployment rate](/taiwan/unemployment) : DGBAS's monthly rate. Taiwan's unemployment is low and stable, and has held in a narrow band in the mid-3s in recent years, so small moves can still be informative.

- [Employment](/taiwan/employment) : the number of employed persons, a read on the strength of the domestic and export-driven labour market.

- [Labour force participation rate](/taiwan/participation-rate) : the share of the working-age population in the labour force; together with employment it shows whether unemployment changes reflect hiring or people entering or leaving the labour force.

### Reserves and the exchange rate

- [Foreign exchange reserves](/taiwan/foreign-reserves) : Taiwan's official reserves in USD billions, monthly. Changes reflect intervention, valuation effects on non-dollar assets and investment income, so they are an imperfect but useful indicator of CBC activity.

- [Trade-weighted index (NEER)](/taiwan/trade-weighted-index) : the BIS broad nominal effective exchange rate for TWD, monthly, a check on the currency's strength against the full basket of trading partners, not just the US dollar.

The TWD catalogue does not currently include CPI, GDP, export orders or bond yields. It is best treated as a labour, reserves and policy set to be combined with market data.

## TWD Release Timing

Taiwan uses National Standard Time (Asia/Taipei, UTC+8) all year, with no daylight saving.

## Worked Example: August 2026 Unemployment

DGBAS's Manpower Survey for August 2026 put the unemployment rate at 3.41 per cent, up from 3.39 per cent in July. The request:

```
curl -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY" "https://api.fxmacrodata.com/v1/announcements/twd/unemployment?start_date=2026-08-01"
```

The latest row returned (abridged to the fields used here):

```
{
  "currency": "TWD",
  "indicator": "unemployment",
  "data": [
    {
      "date": "2026-08-01",
      "val": 3.41,
      "previous_value": 3.39,
      "previous_date": "2026-07-01",
      "announcement_datetime": 1790064000,
      "announcement_datetime_local": "2026-09-22T16:00:00+08:00"
    }
  ]
}
```

The epoch`1790064000`is 08:00 UTC on 22 September 2026, which is 16:00 local time (Asia/Taipei) on 22 September 2026.

The rate has risen in each month since May, from 3.27 per cent to 3.41 per cent in August. Over the same period employment rose from 11,634,000 to 11,655,000 and participation from 59.50 to 59.69 per cent, so the higher unemployment rate is consistent with more people joining the labour force rather than with job losses. That distinction is only visible because all three series are published together and share a timestamp.

The reserves series added another data point on 5 October 2026: USD 600.74 billion for September, slightly below August's 601.90 billion. Request it by replacing`unemployment`with`foreign_reserves`in the URL.

The trade-weighted index gives the broader currency context for those two releases. The BIS nominal effective rate for TWD fell from 103.25 in June 2026 to 101.68 in July and 100.79 in August, a decline of about 2.4 per cent in two months, so the New Taiwan dollar weakened against its basket of trading partners while reserves were broadly flat. A flat reserve figure during a period of currency weakness is consistent with limited dollar selling by the central bank, although valuation effects mean the monthly figure should not be read as an exact intervention number.

## How Traders Use TWD Data

- **Reserves as an intervention gauge.**A rise in reserves during a period of TWD strength suggests the CBC has been buying dollars to slow appreciation; a fall during weakness suggests it has been selling. Traders read the monthly change alongside USD/TWD over the same month.

- **Life-insurer hedging.**Taiwan's life insurers hold large amounts of foreign bonds, and changes in their currency hedging can move USD/TWD sharply. The macro series do not capture these flows directly, which is why traders combine official data with flow commentary.

- **Equity and semiconductor flows.**Foreign investors' purchases and sales of Taiwanese equities, dominated by semiconductor names, are a major source of TWD demand and supply.

- **Policy rate spreads.**The gap between the CBC discount rate and US short rates is wide, which has encouraged Taiwanese investors to hold US-dollar assets. Changes in that gap, more often on the US side, affect hedging and outflows.

- **Labour market slack.**Unemployment and participation trends show whether domestic demand is firm enough for the CBC to tighten, or soft enough for it to stay on hold.
