Predictions API contract
Not every forecast is a market consensus
Eight kinds of number can answer “what is expected for this release?”, and they are not interchangeable. A central bank’s own projection, a survey of forecasters, an options-implied probability and a statistical nowcast have different accuracy, different horizons and different revision behaviour. prediction_class tells you which one you are holding.
Filter on this
prediction_class
How the number was produced. Two of the eight classes represent professional consensus. Household and business expectations have their own class.
Never a consensus
fxmacrodata
Our own estimate, generated for every confirmed release. Useful, but do not present it as a market consensus.
Availability
Set by the publisher, not by your plan
Many releases have no compiled consensus from any official source. Where none exists, no subscription adds one.
Request the exact forecast class you need
Filter the dedicated endpoint instead of treating an unfiltered first result as consensus. prediction_class is the field to filter on; the older prediction_type still works unchanged for existing clients.
GET https://api.fxmacrodata.com/v1/predictions/gbp/inflation
?prediction_class=compiled_consensus
&pre_release_only=true
X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY
Use prediction_source for a specific provider or publication, and prediction_source_label for display. The source slug and label describe the forecast source; they do not guarantee a source URL.
An empty result tells you why it is empty
A filtered request that matches nothing still returns HTTP 200. The availability block on every response lists which classes have a publishing source for that pair at all, and why the class you asked for came back empty, so you never have to guess whether the gap is your plan, your date range, or the data itself.
"availability": {
"classes_with_sources": ["model_nowcast", "institutional_projection", "fxmacrodata"],
"returned_classes": [],
"reason": { "compiled_consensus": "no_source_for_pair" }
}
| reason | What it means |
|---|---|
| no_source_for_pair | No publisher produces this class of forecast for this currency and indicator. A property of the data, not of your plan: no subscription adds it. |
| outside_requested_window | A source covers this pair but published nothing inside your date range and series selection. Widen the dates. |
| outside_freemium_window | A source covers this pair, but the matching rows fall outside the history window available to this request. |
| values_require_key | A source covers this pair, and forecast values need a plan. Only ever returned alongside the full source list, so you can see what a plan would unlock before buying one. |
Check coverage before you buy a key
Forecast values need a plan on every currency, USD included. Which publishers cover which indicator does not: /v1/predictions/coverage is free and needs no key. It returns the publisher behind every indicator, the prediction_class each one produces, whether any of them is a genuine consensus, and the verified archive floor where we have probed it. It returns no forecast values.
curl https://api.fxmacrodata.com/v1/predictions/coverage
curl https://api.fxmacrodata.com/v1/predictions/coverage/usd
A forecast request made without a key answers 401 carrying the same catalogue for the pair you asked for, so a refusal still tells you whether the gap is your plan or the data. If a publisher is not listed there, no subscription adds it.
Inspect how each historical forecast was captured
predictions[].provenance distinguishes a forecast stored by FXMacroData when its model ran from a historical value imported later from an official publisher archive. It also states what generated_at is based on, the source timestamp precision, whether later data was used to reconstruct the value, and which vintages the feed retains.
capture_mode=stored_at_generation
FXMacroData model output archived by the live generation workflow. The durable US CPI and employment-series model archive currently begins with August 2026 reference periods; older model outputs are unavailable, not recreated.
capture_mode=retrospective_official_archive_import
A publisher's genuine historical forecast value imported later by FXMacroData. Cleveland Fed history is in this category: it is not a current-model reconstruction, but FXMacroData did not capture it in real time. The feed keeps the final pre-release point per target month and uses a date-based known-at marker.
An absent provenance object is not an assurance: it means that source's ingest semantics have not yet been audited for this public field. See the point-in-time guide for the full history and pagination contract.
Prediction class reference
Every class answers the same question in a different way. Only the two marked consensus of forecasters represent what a group of people expects; other classes distinguish household and business expectations, institutional projections, models and market prices.
| prediction_class | What it is | Produced by | Customer label |
|---|---|---|---|
| compiled_consensusConsensus of forecasters | An official publisher's compilation of independent forecasters' estimates. The target period and statistic are the publisher's own; an annual or quarterly forecast is not a forecast for each monthly release. | many independent forecasters, aggregated by a publisher | Compiled consensus |
| forecaster_surveyConsensus of forecasters | A survey of professional forecasters or financial-market participants, published by an official institution or its commissioned survey producer. Its respondent population, forecast horizon and publication vintage remain explicit. | surveyed forecasters, aggregated by the surveying institution | Forecaster survey |
| expectations_survey | A survey of households, businesses, labour organisations or a combined non-professional panel. It describes that population's expectations, rather than professional-economist consensus. | the published household, business or combined panel | Business and household expectations |
| market_implied | Derived from traded instrument prices, usually options or futures. It reflects what the market is priced for, not what any person forecast. | traded prices | Market implied |
| model_nowcast | A statistical model's estimate of the current period, published and maintained by a central bank or reserve bank. Updated continuously as inputs arrive; no human forecast is involved. | a published statistical model | Model nowcast |
| central_bank_projection | A central bank's own published projection for the variable, from a monetary policy report, staff projection round or equivalent official publication. | the central bank itself | Central-bank projection |
| institutional_projection | A projection published by a multilateral or national institution that is not the currency's central bank, such as the IMF or the OECD. Typically annual and revised a few times per year. | a multilateral or national institution | Institutional projection |
| fxmacrodata | An FXMacroData-generated estimate combining central-bank guidance, survey consensus, historical trends and recent prints. It is our number, not a market consensus, and must never be presented as one. | FXMacroData | FXMacroData forecast |
Legacy prediction_type values
Every response still carries prediction_type, and it still works as a filter, so nothing built against it breaks. It grew one value at a time per source and ended up splitting instruments that are the same thing: the ECB and Philadelphia Fed Surveys of Professional Forecasters landed in market_consensus and survey respectively, and imf_weo names a publisher rather than a category. prediction_class is the field to build on.
| Legacy prediction_type | Now reported as |
|---|---|
| market_consensus | compiled_consensus or forecaster_survey, depending on the source |
| survey | forecaster_survey |
| market_prediction | market_implied |
| model_nowcast | model_nowcast |

Source-labelled forecast coverage
Every currency/indicator pair below carries at least one external, source-labelled forecast feed. The FXMacroData Blended Forecast (prediction_source=fxmacrodata_blended) is additionally generated for every confirmed release-calendar announcement across all supported currencies, so it is not repeated per row. Where a pair has been verified against the production archive, its pre-release history depth is shown; unverified pairs should still be probed with pre_release_only=true before production use.

No official source publishes a per-release monthly consensus, so the data array carries FXMacroData's own forecast alone. (checked 2026-09-10) |
A pair absent from this matrix has no declared external announcement forecast; native survey coverage is listed separately below — for example, historical event-specific market consensus is not available for USD non-farm payrolls, average hourly earnings, PPI, or retail sales. The blended forecast still covers those releases going forward, and there is no other endpoint, plan, or export route that unlocks additional historical consensus rows.

Join forecast to actual
Each prediction group includes announcement_id. Match it to the same field from /v1/announcements/{currency}/{indicator}. The realised value is normally data[].val. For USD NFP, val is the total payroll-employment level and change is the official monthly jobs gain or loss; current NFP predictions target the level. Request revisions=all when you need revision history; do not infer revisions from a later overwrite.

Understand official source links
source_url is optional. When present on an announcement, source_url_scope tells you whether it points to the exact release, the broader dataset, or the underlying series. Do not promise an exact BLS, BEA, or other official release permalink for every event.
For a customer-facing citation, show the link only when it is present and label its scope honestly. The forecast source fields are separate from the announcement's official source fields.
Run the coverage preflightOfficial forecasts in their own periods
Central-bank projections and official forecaster surveys retain their published quarters, calendar years and survey horizons in the official_forecasts array. Each row includes prediction_class, target_period, period_basis, unit, the original source_url and publication precision. Unknown publication dates remain empty; a date without a release time does not establish an intraday availability timestamp. The prediction_class, prediction_source, start_date and end_date filters apply to this array; official_limit caps its rows (default 500, 0 omits them).
Read a source in its original forecast periods
Select a source on the currency endpoint to retrieve its native variables, including forecasts without a matching announcement series. Use variable, target_period, statistic, respondent_population, prediction_class or publication_precision to narrow the result. Set limit to at most 1,000 and pass official_forecast_next_cursor as before_id for the next page.

official_forecast_calendar lists verified publication times for the selected forecast source, with its official schedule evidence. These are forecast-publication events; the economic announcements being forecast have their own release calendar. A source with no confirmed future time returns an empty forecast calendar.
GET /v1/predictions/usd/unemployment?prediction_class=forecaster_survey&start_date=2024-01-01
Example: the Philadelphia Fed Survey of Professional Forecasters gives dated medians for the unemployment rate, payroll change, CPI, core CPI, PCE and core PCE for the survey quarter and the next four, with vintages back to 1990.

- 1. Check the coverage matrix above, then confirm each required pair with a live query.
- 2. If a consensus is mandatory, filter
prediction_class=compiled_consensusorforecaster_survey, and read theavailabilityblock when the result is empty. - 3. Check several upcoming and recent releases, not one sample row.
- 4. Verify
source_urlandsource_url_scopeseparately. - 5. Confirm revision and history needs on the announcements endpoint.
- 6. Design a clear unavailable state for missing optional fields.
