The Swiss National Bank's total assets rose to 937,969 CHF mn at the end of August, up 22,227 CHF mn from 915,742 CHF mn in July, according to the SNB release on September 30, 2026. It was the second monthly increase in a row and took the balance sheet to the highest level in the recent record.

The SNB's balance sheet is dominated by foreign currency investments built up over years of currency market operations, so its size moves with exchange rates, asset prices and any purchases or sales of foreign currency. Together, July and August added more than 59,000 CHF mn. For CHF traders, the balance sheet is a window onto both valuation trends and the central bank's activity in currency markets.

Recent Readings

What Central Bank Assets Measures

This series records the total assets on the Swiss National Bank's balance sheet, reported in millions of Swiss francs. The largest component is foreign exchange reserves, held mainly as government bonds and equities in major currencies. Gold, claims from repo transactions and other assets make up the remainder.

Because most SNB assets are denominated in foreign currencies, their value in francs changes whenever the franc moves against the euro, the dollar and other currencies, and whenever bond and equity prices change. The SNB has also used foreign currency purchases and sales as a policy tool, which directly change the size of the balance sheet. The monthly data do not by themselves separate these effects, so analysts read them alongside market movements and the SNB's quarterly disclosures of its foreign exchange transactions.

Breaking Down the September 2026 Numbers

The August reading of 937,969 CHF mn is 22,227 CHF mn, or about 2.4%, above July's 915,742 CHF mn. Across the eight months from January to August, total assets were 890,288, 876,444, 881,111, 884,158, 879,768, 878,897, 915,742 and 937,969 CHF mn.

From February to June the balance sheet was remarkably stable, moving within a narrow range of about 876,000 to 884,000 CHF mn. July broke out of that range with an increase of 36,845 CHF mn, and August added a further 22,227 CHF mn. The two-month rise of 59,072 CHF mn is the largest move in the window, and the balance sheet now stands about 5.4% above its January level.

The SNB's foreign currency reserves rose by 11,746 CHF mn in August and its gold holdings increased in value by 10,086 CHF mn, which together account for nearly all of the rise in total assets during the month.

Impact on CHF and FX Markets

Balance sheet data are published with a lag and generally have little immediate market impact. Their relevance for the franc lies in what they suggest about valuation trends and SNB activity. Growth in foreign reserves at a time when the SNB is buying foreign currency would indicate efforts to restrain franc strength, while growth driven by asset prices has no such policy signal.

The franc remains one of the main safe-haven currencies, attracting inflows during periods of global uncertainty. The SNB has historically been willing to intervene to prevent excessive appreciation, and traders watching EUR/CHF and USD/CHF pay close attention to any sign that it is active in the market. Quarterly intervention disclosures provide the confirmation that monthly balance sheet data cannot.

Monetary Policy Implications

The SNB held its policy rate at 0.00% at its September 24 meeting. With the policy rate at zero, the central bank's balance sheet and its willingness to act in currency markets are important parts of its toolkit. A larger balance sheet does not in itself signal a change in policy, but it shows the scale of the assets the SNB manages and the exposure it carries to global markets.

Swiss inflation rose to 1.0% in September, within the SNB's 0% to 2% range for price stability. That gives the central bank room to keep rates on hold. If franc strength threatened to push inflation toward the bottom of the range, currency purchases would be the more likely response than negative rates.

Looking Ahead

The September balance sheet figures will show whether the summer increase continues. Movements in the franc against the euro and dollar, as well as global bond and equity prices, will largely determine valuation changes. The SNB's quarterly report on foreign exchange transactions will indicate whether any of the recent growth reflected active purchases.

The key question is whether the July and August increases mark a new trend or a one-off shift. A balance sheet that keeps growing alongside a stable franc would raise questions about SNB activity, while a return to the stable range of the first half of the year would suggest the summer moves were mostly about valuations.
