What is Consumer Expectations?

Consumer expectations indices isolate the forward-looking component of household sentiment surveys — what respondents say they expect for income, employment, and economic conditions over the next six to twelve months.

Why it matters for FX

Expectations lead the present-situation index by several months and lead retail spending by a similar lag. A sharp drop in expectations is one of the most reliable early recession warnings, which makes it a useful currency input.

How to read this page

Watch the expectations-minus-present-situation gap. When expectations fall well below the present situation, history says a slowdown is brewing.

What to watch for

  • Gap between expectations and present situation
  • Income expectations as a spending lead
  • Inflation expectations sub-component
  • Trend rather than single months
  • Cross-check with retail sales
