What is Monthly CPI?
Monthly CPI is the higher-frequency, monthly-published consumer-price index alternative to quarterly inflation measures. Australia's monthly CPI indicator (ABS) is the headline example.
Why it matters for FX
Monthly CPI provides high-frequency reads on inflation trends and reduces the lag between events and policy reactions. For AUD, the monthly CPI indicator has become a first-tier event since its introduction.
How to read this page
Watch year-over-year change vs central-bank target. Cross-reference with the slower quarterly CPI for confirmation, since the monthly series typically has reduced coverage.
What to watch for
- Year-over-year change vs target band
- Coverage and methodology caveats
- Convergence with quarterly CPI
