What is Part-Time Employment?
Part-time employment measures the count of workers in jobs below the full-time hours threshold. It includes workers who want full-time hours but cannot find them (involuntary part-time) and those who prefer reduced hours.
Why it matters for FX
Rising part-time employment alongside falling full-time employment is one of the cleanest early-cycle signals that labour demand is weakening, even if the headline employment number looks fine. Central banks watch for it; FX traders should too.
How to read this page
Track the part-time share of total employment over time. Spikes in involuntary part-time (where reported) are the clearest stress signal.
What to watch for
- Part-time share of total employment trending up
- Involuntary part-time component
- Hours-worked alongside
- Cross-check with full-time employment
- Sector breakdown
