What is Transaction Deposits?

Transaction deposits are checking-account balances and other demand deposits available for immediate spending. They are the largest component of M1 in most economies.

Why it matters for FX

Transaction-deposit growth tracks how much spending power households and firms hold in immediately accessible accounts. Falling balances during high-rate periods typically reflect a shift into yielding accounts (money-market funds, term deposits) — a tightening signal.

How to read this page

Watch year-over-year change. Compare with savings and term deposits to see where balances are migrating.

What to watch for

  • Migration to higher-yielding accounts during hike cycles
  • Year-over-year change vs nominal GDP
  • Cash-management cycles in firms
  • Rate-differential to short-term yields
  • Cross-check with M1 dynamics
