This guide sets out exactly what FXMacroData serves for the New Zealand dollar: 21 series covering the Reserve Bank of New Zealand's Official Cash Rate, wholesale rates and government bond yields, quarterly CPI and labour-market data from Stats NZ, GDP, dairy exports, terms of trade and the external accounts. It explains who publishes each series, when it lands in New Zealand time and in UTC, and how NZD/USD traders put the numbers to work.
Quick answer
What is covered
21 NZD series: the OCR, 90-day bank bill, overnight deposit rate, 1y to 10y government bond yields, an inflation-linked yield, CPI and core CPI, GDP, labour data, dairy exports, terms of trade, trade and current account, reserves and the NZD trade-weighted index.
Who publishes it
The Reserve Bank of New Zealand (RBNZ) and Stats NZ, with the trade-weighted index taken from the Bank for International Settlements. FXMacroData records each release with its announcement timestamp.
Why it matters
NZD is a small, open, commodity-linked currency. The OCR path, quarterly CPI and the dairy-driven terms of trade explain most of the macro story behind NZD/USD and AUD/NZD.
Takeaway: New Zealand publishes many key statistics quarterly, so each CPI, labour and GDP print carries three months of information and can reprice the OCR path on its own.
Who Publishes New Zealand Data
Two institutions produce nearly everything in the NZD catalogue. The Reserve Bank of New Zealand sets the Official Cash Rate under a flexible inflation-targeting mandate with a 1 to 3 per cent target band and a focus on the 2 per cent midpoint. The RBNZ also publishes daily wholesale interest rates (bank bills, the overnight rate and New Zealand Government Stock yields), official reserve assets and its own sectoral factor model measure of core inflation.
Stats NZ publishes the national statistics: the quarterly Consumers Price Index, the Household Labour Force Survey and Labour Cost Index, quarterly GDP, the balance of payments, overseas merchandise trade (including the monthly dairy export figures) and the overseas trade indexes used for the terms of trade. The NZD trade-weighted index in the catalogue is the BIS nominal effective exchange rate.
FXMacroData collects each series from the official publication, stores the value with the period it refers to (date) and the moment it was published (announcement_datetime, a Unix epoch in seconds), and serves it through one REST shape, the dashboard and the MCP server. Releases are typically available within seconds of official publication; the measured record is on the release-speed page.
NZD Indicators Covered
Policy and short-term rates
- RBNZ Official Cash Rate: the policy rate, recorded for every decision including holds. It anchors New Zealand short-term rates and the NZD carry versus USD and AUD.
- 90-day bank bill rate: the daily wholesale benchmark that prices the next few OCR decisions, so it moves before and after every data surprise.
- Overnight deposit rate: a daily overnight money-market rate published by the RBNZ, useful to check how closely funding tracks the OCR.
Government bond yields
- 1-year, 2-year, 5-year and 10-year government bond yields: daily RBNZ secondary-market yields. The 2-year is the cleanest read on the expected OCR path; the 10-year spread to US Treasuries feeds longer-horizon NZD/USD models.
- Inflation-linked bond yield: the real yield on New Zealand's inflation-indexed bonds. Compared with a nominal yield of similar maturity it gives a market view of inflation compensation.
Inflation
- CPI inflation: the quarterly Consumers Price Index, annual per cent change. New Zealand has no official monthly CPI, which makes each quarterly print one of the biggest NZD events of the year.
- Core inflation (sectoral factor model): the RBNZ's preferred underlying measure. When headline and core diverge, the market usually trades core.
Growth and activity
- GDP: quarterly real production GDP in NZD billions. It arrives late relative to other data, so its FX impact depends on how far it changes the RBNZ's output-gap assessment.
Labour market
- Unemployment rate, employment level and participation rate: the quarterly Household Labour Force Survey. Unemployment relative to the RBNZ's estimate of its sustainable rate is a core input to OCR decisions.
- Wages (Labour Cost Index): quarterly wage growth released alongside the labour survey, the bridge between a tight labour market and services inflation.
External sector and commodities
- Dairy exports: monthly dairy export values in NZD millions. Dairy is New Zealand's largest goods export, so this series links global dairy prices to national income.
- Terms of trade: quarterly export prices relative to import prices. Rising terms of trade lift national income and have historically supported NZD.
- Trade balance and current account balance: quarterly balance-of-payments figures. New Zealand runs a persistent current account deficit, so the size of the gap matters for how much foreign funding NZD needs.
- Official reserve assets: monthly RBNZ reserves, the capacity the Bank has for FX intervention.
- Trade-weighted index (NEER): the BIS nominal effective exchange rate, a broad gauge of NZD strength beyond the US dollar pair.
NZD Release Timing
Stats NZ publishes at 10:45 New Zealand time, and the RBNZ announces the OCR at 14:00. New Zealand observes daylight saving from late September to early April, so the UTC time shifts by an hour across the year: 10:45 NZST is 22:45 UTC on the previous day, and 10:45 NZDT is 21:45 UTC.
| Release | Publisher | Frequency | Local time (Pacific/Auckland) | UTC |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| OCR decision | RBNZ | About 7 times a year | 14:00 | 02:00 (NZST) / 01:00 (NZDT) |

Worked Example: The September 2026 OCR Decision
The most recent RBNZ decision in the catalogue raised the Official Cash Rate from 2.50 per cent to 2.75 per cent. The request below fetches it with a paid key:
curl -H "X-API-Key: YOUR_API_KEY" "https://api.fxmacrodata.com/v1/announcements/nzd/policy_rate?start_date=2026-09-01"
The latest row returned (abridged to the fields used here):
{
"currency": "NZD",
"indicator": "policy_rate",
"data": [
{
"date": "2026-09-02",
"val": 2.75,
"previous_value": 2.5,
"previous_date": "2026-07-08",
"announcement_datetime": 1788314400,
"announcement_datetime_local": "2026-09-02T14:00:00+12:00"
}
]
}
The epoch 1788314400 is 02:00 UTC on 2 September 2026, which is 14:00 local time (Pacific/Auckland) on 2 September 2026.
Two details matter for automated strategies. First, date is the decision date and announcement_datetime is the publication moment, so a backtest can align the rate change with the exact NZD/USD price at 14:00 New Zealand time instead of a daily close. Second, holds are recorded as rows too, so a strategy can tell "no meeting" from "meeting, no change". The previous decision on 8 July 2026 had already lifted the OCR from 2.25 to 2.50 per cent.
How Traders Use NZD Data
- Quarterly CPI versus the OCR path. Compare the CPI and sectoral core prints with the 2-year government bond yield and 90-day bank bill rate in the same session. A CPI surprise that moves the 2-year by more than the bank bill usually signals a repricing of several OCR meetings, not just the next one.
- Terms of trade and dairy. Track dairy exports and the terms of trade as a slow-moving income signal. Sustained improvement in both tends to support NZD against currencies without the same commodity exposure, and divergence between them is a warning that the move is price-led rather than volume-led.
- AUD/NZD relative policy. Pair the OCR, CPI and unemployment series with their Australian equivalents. AUD/NZD often trades the gap between RBNZ and RBA expectations more cleanly than either currency trades against the US dollar.
- Labour data as the second CPI. Because the labour survey and Labour Cost Index arrive in the same quarterly window, unemployment and wage growth often decide whether the market believes a CPI move will last.
- Current account funding. Watch the quarterly current account balance alongside global risk sentiment. A wide deficit leaves NZD more exposed when global funding conditions tighten.
